The bench on the square in Nefyn was in the early seventies occupied by local pensioners like my grandfather and his friends. They would gather in the late morning and early afternoon to chat, smoke and chew tobacco.

The newly painted gable end of the building behind the bench was defaced by the slogan ‘ taniwch dros Gymru’ meaning ‘fire for Wales’ supporting the cottage burning that was going on at the time as a protest against second homes.

I was in Nefyn visiting family at the time and took numerous snaps, not having time to spend on a drawing. I found the contrast between the slogan and the smokers amusing and filed it away in my memory bank to visit later.

Many years later I discovered the photograph and made the drawing that eventually became the print.
